SHILLONG: The issue of calling tender for two stadiums in Ampati and Pomlakrai came up in the Assembly on Wednesday though the state government is yet to prepare a master plan for the National Games 2022.
Raising a question on Monday, Independent MLA Lambor Malngiang wanted to know the number of tenders called by the previous government in connection with the construction of stadiums.
To this, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said tenders were called for construction of an indoor and an outdoor stadiums in Ampati and an indoor stadium at Pomlakrai, which falls under the constituency of Lambor. The Sports and Youth minister said that the Pomlakrai stadium is estimated to be constructed at a cost of Rs 22.15 crore. This prompted BJP legislator from South Shillong Sanbor Shullai to ask whether any proposal has been made for indoor or outdoor stadium in his constituency. When Lyngdoh said that no such proposal has been made, Shullai asked, “Why?” Lyngdoh replied that he required notice to provide reply. Shullai persisted and asked whether the government would consider his constituency for an indoor/outdoor stadium to which the Minister said that it will be considered. It was at this point that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had to intervene and inform the two legislators that a master plan and proposal for the National Games are yet to be finalised and added that the actual blueprint has not been made as discussions need to be held with consultants and mapping also needs to be done.
“It is not to be looked at as an individual constituency issue,” he told the MLAs.
Conrad added that the finalisation of places for the National Games depends on the Organising Committee headed by him.
Stating that hosting the National Games is a massive event, Sangma called upon the cooperation of all departments, MLAs.
“The success of the event will take the state to new heights,” he added.
