TURA: Private night bus operators from Tura to Shillong and Tura to Guwahati have announced enhanced new rates for passengers travelling from Tura to the two destinations at the same time seeking the approval of the District Transport Officer (DTO) on the enhanced travel fare.

In their letter to the DTO the vehicle operators said that the current rate being followed was fixed eight years ago and is not enough as fees, taxes, insurance amount, permit renewal fees, cost of tyres, tubes and other spare parts as well as salary of drivers and helpers have gone up.

The current rate being charged by night buses from Tura to Shillong (323 kms) is Rs 350/- and Tura to Guwahati (220 kms) is Rs 250/-. Tata Sumos at present are charging Rs 450/- and Rs 300/- for the varied distance.

“Though the rate was already fixed at Rs 1.43/km in 2012 for buses which bring the rate to Rs 461.89 to Shillong and Rs 314.6 to Guwahati, we have not followed the new rate in public interest at our own loss,” the operators said.

The recent order banning carriers in all vehicles has added to the problems of the operators as whatever small income generated by carrying goods to tide losses has been stopped.

Under the new enhanced rates Night Bus fare from Tura to Shillong would be Rs 460/- and Tura to Guwahati Rs 320/-, Tata Sumo fare from Tura to Shillong at Rs 550/- and Tura to Guwahati at Rs 400/-, while the rate for Xylo to Guwahati would be charged at Rs 500/- and for Traveller at Rs 400/-.

However, the new rates will be effective only after proper information is given to the public and approval is given by the DTO.
