SHILLONG: GNLA chairman Champion Sangma was released on bail on Friday from Shillong jail following the intervention of the Supreme Court.
Champion was in jail for more than five years after he was arrested in July 2012. His lawyer Sujit Dey said around 11.30 am, he got information from the Additional District Magistrate (Judicial) of Resubelpara, PK Boro, that he has already passed an order for the release of Champion and a messenger was sent to Shillong along with the order.
A case was pending against Champion in Resubelpara.
The messenger handed over the order to the jailor leading to the release of Champion.
Later, he was released around 3.30 pm.
Dey said Champion cannot leave the jurisdiction of Shillong Sessions Court as the trial related to another case is going on.
