SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has objected to BSNL’s decision to announce Good Friday (March 30) as a working day.
A delegation of KHNAM youth wing leaders, led by its president Thomas Passah, met BSNL General Manager (HR and Admin) Rajendra Kumar on Saturday to sought clarification on the decision. Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Passah said the decision was “unfortunate”.
“We object to any central government offices declaring Good Friday as a working day,” Passah said and added that this decision was against the provisions of the Constitution and against the sentiments of the Christians.
Good Friday is a gazetted holiday in India.
Passah said Kumar has assured that he would take up this matter with the higher-ups.
The KHNAM youth wing president urged the BSNL employees not to attend office on Good Friday.
When contacted, a BSNL official in Meghalaya said the PSU hierarchy will take the necessary decision in this regard. He also said the decision to work on March 30 was not taken at the local level.
