SHILLONG: More protests have surfaced against the Centre declaring Good Friday as a working day.
Congress legislator and Opposition chief whip PT Sawkmie, in a statement issued on Sunday, opposed the notification by the Government of India that Good Friday will be a working day in central offices, including BSNL.
“This notification is against the sentiments of the Christian community because Good Friday is observed as an important day by the community,” Sawkmie said.
Since the BJP came to power in Delhi, it had come out with different notifications like Good Governance Day and Digital India Day on days of religious significance for Christians.
Sawkmie urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and revoke the notification as a mark of respect to the sentiments of Christian.
Congress MLA Charles Pyngrope said, “They should not do that. They should respect the sentiments of the Christians in the state and the country as a whole.”
Asked whether the party will take up the matter with the Centre, he said, “Definitely, we will.”
Earlier, KHNAM and others had also protested against the notification.
Though calls were made to know the stand of the state government on this matter, there was no response from both Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Home Minister James Sangma.
