SHILLONG: The by- election to the Williamnagar Assembly constituency which was adjourned following the murder of NCP candidate Johnathone Sangma, will now be held on April 27.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday communicated about the elections to the Meghalaya Chief Electoral Office.
As per the ECI, the last date for filing of nomination by the NCP candidate is April 10 whereas the date for the scrutiny of the nominations of the NCP candidate is April 11.
The last date for withdrawal of the nomination is April 13 while the poll will be held on April 27
The timing of the poll has been fixed from 7 AM to 4 PM while counting of votes will take place on May 1 from 8 am.
It may be reminded that the NCP has decided to field Johnathone Sangma’s wife, Krenilla Marak in the by-election.
The election to the Williamnagar Assembly polls was deferred just few days ahead of the state Assembly polls held on February 27, after NCP candidate Johnathone Sangma had been killed on February 18, when he was returning from Sawilgre village after carrying out election campaign. He was returning from the campaign in a convoy of four vehicles when militants triggered a powerful IED blast near Denamgre village killing him and others.
For the by-election, as of now there are as many as 8 candidates including Marcuise N Marak (NPP), Deborah C. Marak (INC), Mahamsing M. Sangma (UDP), Sengbath R Marak (Independent), Lahatson N Marak (Independent ), Santosh R. Marak (BJP), Siljong R. Marak (Independent) and Jan N. Arengh (Independent)
The Williamngar constituency which is presently represented by Congress MLA Deborah Marak has total number of 32021 voters including 16567 males and 15454 females.
