GUWAHATI: Assam police have launched a search in coordination with Meghalaya police for unidentified miscreants who were allegedly stalking four young ladies travelling in a car along the Shillong-Guwahati Highway near Nongpoh while they were returning after a day-long trip to the hill capital city in the neighbouring Meghalaya.

The incident took place around afternoon on Sunday when four girls were returning in a car driven by one of the girls, from Shillong after sightseeing. Once their car reached Nongpoh area, the girls noticed that another car was following them.

According to one of the girls who was in the car, the miscreants, all of them in their middle age, tried to stop their car and even dashed the front side of their car in the process. However, because of the alertness of the young lady who was on the driving wheels, the four harassed ladies could manage to speed way to safety. The girls then lodged a complaint with Jorabat police station in Assam alleging attempt to molest them unidentified miscreants.

“We are coordinating with the Meghalaya police to identify the culprits and nab them,” a senior police official said.

The aggrieved girls failed to elicit any response from the special women helpline number (181) of Assam government which was launched just a few days ago by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.   They said the number was not working at all.
