SHILLONG: The A•Chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF ) has petitioned the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma asking him to upgrade the Phukan Memorial College  located in Dalu.

The NGO in a petition to the Chief Minister said that the college infrastructure like water supply, building structures, maintenance of playground etc., the teaching staffs and the students require timely upgradation.

“The infrastructure lies in miserable state, the teaching and non-teaching staffs are inadequately paid for their service and the college authorities have to run the college with minimum funds to give education to the students through monthly fees which falls way short of the minimum requirement for imparting standard and quality education,” the petition said

According to AIJIF,  the college earlier used to receive a lumpsum  grant -in- aid  from Director of Higher and Technical Education, Meghalaya, for a time period  from 04-07-2005 to 26-05-2016  which has been stopped since  the latter date which has aggravated the situation  and  made it much difficult to sustain  the cost of quality education.

“It is required on the part of the state government to discuss the matter in the Assembly or in a cabinet meeting and seek a way to assist the college to provide better education,” the memorandum added.
