SHILLONG: Parties and candidates have welcomed the by-poll date for Williamnagar.
Congress candidate Deborah Marak, who is in Shillong for Easter, said she will rush back to Williamnagar following the announcement. “Enough time is there for further campaigning,” she said.
NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said earlier the party had campaigned for its candidate Marcuise Marak and since the date has been announced, there will be further campaigns.
NCP president Saleng Sangma said there will not be any change in the candidature of Krinilla Marak, the wife of late NCP candidate Jonathone Sangma, to contest the Williamnagar seat.
Winning the seat is crucial for these parties and if the Congress retains the seat, the tally will be 21. If NPP wins, the strength will rise to 20.
Even if the NCP candidate secures the seat, this will be advantageous for the MDA coalition as the lone NCP legislator Saleng is supporting the government.
