SHILLONG: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday removed the signboard at Lady Hydari Park and put up a new one that reads Phan Nonglait Park and Animal Land.
The union members, who had gathered outside the park on the occasion of Khasi National Awakening Day, reiterated their demand for renaming the park.
Speaking to reporters, KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said the government had issued a notification regarding renaming of the park on September 11, 2001, which has not been implemented till date.
“We demand that the state government rename the park to Phan Nonglait Park as she was one of the freedom fighters who fought against the British,” said Marngar.
The KSU activists pasted the state government notification on the walls of the park. Though security was tightened in certain pockets of the city, the KSU did not take out any rally this year. The Khasi National Awakening Day is observed by the union in memory of freedom fighter U Tirot Sing who fought against the British Raj on April 4, 1829.
