Rs 4.46 crore spent for stipend to teachers trainees in Meghalaya DIETs

SHILLONG: A total amount of Rs 4,46, 50,000 is spent as stipend to candidates selected for teachers’ training under District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET).

The Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed the Congress MLA Winnerson D. Sangma when the latter put up a question whether the candidates were getting scholarship or financial assistance from the government.

Raising a supplementary query, Sangma asked on the enrollment capacity in each DIET to which the Minister said that the enrollment capacity was 100 each in DIETs of Thadlaskein (West Jaintia Hills), Sohra (East Khasi Hills), Resubelpara (North Garo Hills), while the enrollment is 50 each in Nongpoh (Ri-Bhoi), Nongstoin (West Khasi Hills), Tura (West Garo Hills) and Baghmara (South Garo Hills).

In a supplementary query raised by Congress MLA George Lyngdoh on the number of DIETs that are functioning without Principals, the Minister informed that there are four such DIETs in the state- Nongpoh, Nongstoin, Tura and Baghmara.

“Steps have been taken to fill up the post of Principal. Very soon, we will do it,” Rymbui said.

Lyngdoh said, “Infrastructure of DIETs is not proper. Steps should be taken to ensure that DIET centers are improved and upscaled to absorb more teachers.”

Rymbui replied, “It is the endeavour of the government to see proper facility in DIET centers. There is the problem of funds but will see to it that proper infrastructure is develop step by step.”
