Assamese film director Munin Baruah passes away

GUWAHATI: Noted Assamese film director, Munin Baruah passed away at round 1.55 A.M on Saturday at his Kahilipara residence in the city at the age of 72 creating a void in the Assamese film industry.

The popular film director carved a niche for himself in the Assamese film world through a large number of widely appreciated films like ‘Prabhati Pokhir Gaan’, ‘Hiya Diya Niya’, ‘Nayak’, ‘Daag’. He was born in 1946. He won a national award for his film ‘Dinabandhu’.

Baruah started his career in the film industry as a scriptwriter for popular Assamese films like ‘Bowari’, ‘Ghar Sansar’, ‘Sonmoina’ etc. Assamese film ‘Protima’ was his first directorial venture jointly with actor Nipon Goswami in the year 1987. His latest film was ‘Priyar Priya’.

His demise has cast a pall of gloom among his admirers within and outside the Assamese film industry. The actors and other people associated with the film industry have made a bee line at his residence since the ness of his death spread like a wildfire. He will be cremated at Nabagraha crematorium in the city.

Assamese singer and filmmaker Zubeen Garg, actor Jotin Bora will join the departed filmmaker’s son Manas Baruah the performing the last rites as per his wishes. Zubeen Garg has rushed to Guwahati from Majuli where he is shooting a film, hearing the news of demise of the noted film director.
