SHILLONG: A junior commissioned officer of the 3rd India Reserved Battalion, who was deployed for the visit of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and others to Imphal, was found dead with a bullet wound in a hotel room on Sunday morning.
Elangbam Shantikumar Singh was on duty at Hotel Classic Grande, Imphal where Sangma was staying.
Speaking to The Shillong Times over the phone, Manipur DGP LM Khaute said the actual circumstance leading to his death is being probed.
“Around 3.30 am, a gunshot was heard and as soon as the incident was reported, the police officers concerned visited the spot. I visited the spot too where it was seen that the service weapon was lying next to him and one empty case of the service weapon 9 mm was found in the room where they (security personnel) were accommodated,” he said.
The DGP informed that Singh was deployed for general security as there were a host of VIPs at Hotel Grande “and not for any particular individual”.
Asked on the suicide angle, he said, “Investigation is on. Apparently, there are no signs of disputes or quarrels or whatever for the time being… I cannot definitely say because investigation has to take place.”
Singh was from Langmeidong under Kakching District in Manipur.
