TURA: Krinilla Marak, the widow of Late Jonathone N Sangma, the slain NCP candidate for Williamnagar Assembly constituency in Meghalaya, who was given the party ticket after her husband’s demise, on Monday filed her nomination papers to contest the April 27 polls from the constituency.

Jonathone was killed in an IED attack while he was returning from one of his campaigns in a village near Samanda, just nine days prior to the February 27 assembly polls, in one of the dastardliest attacks carried out by GNLA militants in the history of Garo Hills.

Election to the Williamnagar seat was postponed by the Election Commission following Jonathone’s murder and a new date of April 27 was announced on April 2.

In Williamnagar, Krinilla will be pitted against Congress bigwig Deborah C Marak, Mahamsingh M Sangma of the UDP, NPP’s Marcuise N Marak, Santhos R Marak of the BJP and four independents.

The last date for filing of nomination is April 10 and scrutiny of papers will be done the next day on April 11. The last date of withdrawal of nomination papers has been fixed for April 13 and counting of votes will be done on May 1.

Meanwhile, the Ampati seat which has also been left vacant with former Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma resigning from the constituency to take over the reins in Songsak will also hold elections sometime soon. However, the polling date for the constituency is yet to be announced by the Election Commission
