SHILONG: The HSPDP Central executive committee accepted the resignation of Ardent Basaiawmoit from the post of president of the party.

“We have accepted the resignation of Ardent Basaiawmoit from the post of president. He had worked for the party as a leader. In the recent elections although we did not achieve the goal, yet as a leader he took has owned the responsibility to resign from the post of president,” vice president, KP Pangniang told reporters on Tuesday.

“We have also taken a collective responsibility for the election debacle of the party in the recent election but we also have the responsibility to strengthen the party,” he said.

He added that the party would hold a general council in the months to come in a way to strengthen the party in the state as well as its preparation for the Council elections.

Asked on the post of president, Pangniang said that the vice president would be the ad hoc president until the general council elected a new president.

As for the role of Basaiawmoit in the party, he said that the party had not yet decided on the matter which will be decided in the next CEC of the party.

The meeting also discussed on the party’s alliance with NPP-led government, Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), the party has not decided anything on this matter.

Pangniang recalled the former president, Basaiawmoit’s concern over the support of the two MLAs to the MDA government, he said, “The two MLAs (Cabinet Minister Samlin Malniang and Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar) along with the party will have to keep forth the issues of the party in the NPP-led MDA government.”

He added that the two MLAs were to take care of the issues of the party and the MDA to consider the issues of the party which includes the implementation of ILP, opposition to uranium, border etc.

“These issues that the party will take up are mentioned in the manifesto. The party will discuss more about the issues at the minimum programme of the MDA,” he said.

Stand on ILP

MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said that the party would put forth the issues of the party while being part of the government.

“If the state government has some other mechanisms to check influx although the heart of the party is the ILP and if the state government does not consider it, we will see what are the alternatives that the state government puts forth to us to check influx,” he said.

He added that it was too early to comment on alternative mechanism.

Work permit to Bangladeshi

“As a party, we will support the move to give work permit to Bangladeshi but we have to understand on what basis they have made the proposal. The party will look seriously and study in-depth the matter,” Pangniang said.

Common Minimum Programme

Lyngdoh said there was a committee and the sub-committee in the MDA headed by Bindo Lanong to draft the common minimum programme of the parties.

“The Common Minimum Programme will be made public after the MDA committee sits to approve the draft of the sub-committee,” he added.
