SHILLONG: The Jaintia Hills unit of the United Democratic Party (UDP) will suggest to the leadership in Shillong to pull out of the MDA government if Chief Minister Conrad Sangma does not forward the file related to the appointment of Executive Committee members to the governor for his assent.
UDP Jaintia Hills general secretary Kitboklang Nongtdu said the party has formed the new Executive Committee in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) with Moonlight Pariat as the chief.
“We have sent the file with the names of the EC members on March 29 to the District Council Affairs Department but the chief minister has held the file in his office and he has not forwarded it to the governor for his assent,” Nongtdu said.
At present, the JHADC is functioning only with the CEM.
“The UDP is upset because it’s a coalition partner in the state and NPP is not respecting the party,” Nongtdu said.
According to him, the leadership in Jaintia Hills would advise the UDP leadership in Shillong to pull out of the government.
“If the issue is not resolved, the government may collapse,” Nongtdu warned.
Last month, in a surprising twist of events, the Congress came together with UDP to oust JHADC chief Awhoi Andrew Shullai on the last day of the Budget session while NPP stayed out of the game plan.
During the budget session, the JHADC chairman said he had received a no-trust motion from Bison Iano, MDC from Raliang, and suspended all business of the House.
Iano got the support of 17 members, including UDP’s Moonlight Pariat. The NPP members did not support Pariat during the floor test by standing up.
Pariat got the support from the JHADC chairman as well as Shullai and was elected unopposed as the new chief.
