Women’s panel seeks help from Assam counterpart

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) has forwarded the video showing a Garo woman being assaulted by a group of men to its Assam counterpart for prompt action against the perpetrators.
Condemning the assault, which took place in Aolaguri in Assam-Meghalaya border, MSCW chairperson Theilin Phanbuh sought the intervention of her Assam counterpart.
The MSCW vice-chairperson Gamchi T Marak advised the victim’s family to lodge an FIR. Marak went to Tura and Bagendoba police stations to enquire about the case prior to her meeting with the victim’s family.
The video of the assault went viral on social media on April 9. MSCW said these incidents should be dealt with promptly and should not be allowed to happen anywhere in the state. Police had arrested three persons who were part of the mob.
