GSU Raksamgre to disregard both factions of union

 TURA: The Raksamgre Regional Unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has vowed not to recognise or acknowledge either the Tengsak-led faction of the union or the interim body led by Zikku Balgra N Marak, claiming that both factions are illegal as per the union’s constitution.

 

It may be mentioned that the last GSU CEC elections had sparked protest among a section of the members after they alleged Tengsak of attempting to hold a biased and manipulative election. Following the disruption, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) appointed for the purpose had nominated Tengsak for the president’s post until further notice is served for another election.

 

“This is against the constitution as the CEC has the sole responsibility to conduct election but cannot appoint or nominate anyone for any posts,” the regional unit said.

 

With regard to the formation of the interim body under Zikku Balgra N Marak, which was formed on the same day, the regional unit said that it too became invalid a long time back as the interim body is valid only for a period of six months.

 

“The term of the interim body expired in 2015 after six months, but the interim president is still holding on to his post. We cannot accept these two self-proclaimed presidents. We are for a free and fair election otherwise, their illegal actions will break the GSU into pieces,” unit president Greater A Sangma said.
