SHILLONG: In this era of social media, any update about unity or division between races and community can become viral within minutes. Such a case has been reported in the state where photographs of couples from their personal profiles have been used and a video has been circulated to spread hate.

A person lodged a complaint that their photographs from their personal profiles have been used in Facebook and a video has been curate and circulated on the WhatsApp.

The content of the Facebook page and videos carried hate speech against tribal women [Khasi] marrying non-tribal men and the content and language used was a direct threat to them, the police complaint said.

It is seen in the Facebook that a page called Hynniewtrep has uploaded the video while another user has also uploaded the same video in a page called Antor and the video has also gone viral in WhatsApp. The video in Hynniewtrep page has been shared more than 100 times.

Speaking on the matter, East Khasi Hills SP, Davis Marak admitted that it was difficult to stop such videos in social media as the servers of Facebook and Google were located outside India

“Whenever an FIR is filed, we give a request to Facebook and Google to stop it and we have to wait for action on their part,” Marak said.

The servers sometimes provide the details and many times, information is denied citing cyber privacy laws in USA

Though social media was crafted with a good intention to connect people, the medium in recent times has become one of the best tool for rumour mongers to spread hate
