WILLIAMNAGAR: That all is not fair in love and war of politics is passé. A three-time legislator and one almost synonymous with Williamnagar’s electoral politics, Deborah Marak, long used to wearing her confidence on her sleeves, is today an embittered woman.

From corruption slurs to death threats she has weathered it all but this unforeseen poll defeat makes her cry foul at having being back stabbed by her own.

Former chief minister Mukul Sangma’s alleged attempt at ‘eradicating’ all opponents from within the party appears to sound true in the case of the Williamnagar debacle.

According to the former Congress MLA Deborah Marak, “as many as three senior leaders of the party were vigorously campaigning for the Independent candidate Sengbath Marak during the Williamnagar elections.”

Recently-elected Congress MLA from Tikrikilla constituency Jimmy D Sangma along with East Garo Hills district congress committee president Linderson A Sangma and former MDC Lahitson M Sangma allegedly campaigned for Independent candidate Sengbath Marak instead of backing the party candidate Deborah Marak.

“We have records and details of Tikrikilla MLA Jimmy along with Linderson and Lahitson working against my candidature,” revealed Deborah Marak.

She added that she would be lodging a serious complaint with the party high command in New Delhi over the agenda of a section of the party leaders to back another individual.

This is not something new for the Congress candidate in the line up to voting.

Meghalaya Chief Minister and the NPP leader Conrad K Sangma had himself questioned the identity of the Congress candidate for Williamnagar and even accused Mukul Sangma of siding with Independent Sengbath Marak instead of Deborah Marak during campaigning.
