SHILLONG: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has expressed concern over students from the state not excelling in UPSC examinations.
Speaking to reporters, Rymbui hoped that introducing NCERT syllabus in classes XI and XII will help students in preparing for the elite competitive exam.
According to Rymbui, a strong foundation is needed for equipping students for the UPSC examinations.
“We have taken a decision to adopt NCERT textbooks to prepare students for such competitive examinations,” he said.
The minister said it is a matter of concern that none of the students from the state excelled in the examinations in 2017.
“We want some of our students to pass UPSC exam every year but the reason may be that the required facilities are not given to them to excel,” he said.
The education minister also referred to the initiative of former chief minister Mukul Sangma who had introduced scholarships for students preparing for the examinations. “We will continue to provide scholarships,” he said.
According to the minister, students in Meghalaya should see civil service examinations as an opportunity.
In 2014, the state government had signed an agreement with Jain’s IAS Study Circle, New Delhi, to run a coaching centre in Shillong for UPSC aspirants. The coaching centre was established under the chief minister’s career guidance-cum-counselling programme.
However, the government scrapped the agreement following the allegation of poor quality coaching.
