SHILLONG: PS Dkhar, the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills, said on Thursday NGOs do not have the authority to conduct checking for licences but can only assist the district administration.
“They don’t have the right and the authority to conduct such checking. It is unauthorised. They can assist the district administration but not take it (law) into their own hands.” he told The Shillong Times.
Meanwhile, with taxi drivers being checked for labour licences, KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem said taxi drivers do need labour licences.
“Actually, it is the enforcement wing that can conduct checking but the NGOs can write to us,” Syiem said.
Dkhar’s comment comes at a time when licence checks are continuing in the city.
Recently, members of a pressure group had also raided fair price shops.
