MAWKYRWAT: The South West Khasi Hills district administration is trying to find effective ways to segregate and dispose of waste and setting up public toilets.
Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo and other district officials inspected the local market here. “Focus is on finding solutions for proper waste segregation and disposal, provision of adequate toilets to cater the needs of market goers and stalls, and wet waste management,” Laloo told The Shillong Times.
She also said that deliberations were made on identifying a permanent garbage dumping ground for the market waste that will not pollute water sources or rivers.
The team also inspected the Hilland Slaughter House near Photjaud, about 15 km from the market that was opened last year but is yet to be functional.
“It was observed that the distance from the market, lack of water connection and space constraint are dissuading butchers from shifting there,” Laloo said.
It went to Sohkhyllam village to study the present system of slaughtering cattle and ensure that there is no unhygienic practice.
Last August, Laloo had allowed butchers in Mawkyrwat to temporarily slaughter cattle in their own places provided they maintain cleanliness.
Detailed proposals for awareness and action on waste segregation under Swachh Bharat Mission will be submitted by PHE and the Basin Development Unit.
Laloo was accompanied by Mawkyrwat block development officer R Kharbihkhiew, and other government officials from PHE, Urban Affairs, AH and Veterinary and Basin Development Unit as well as the leaders of San Kur-Clan on Thursday.
