Guwahati: The Kamrup (metro) district administration evicted about 15 shops on NH-37 in the Jorabat area near the Assam-Meghalaya border on Monday.

“We cleared encroachments on government land near the Northeast Cancer Hospital on NH 37 apart from clearing a few structures near Dichang Resort in Sonapur. We also made an attempt to clear shops on the Assam side of the Shillong approach but as the authorities of the Shillong NH unit were not present, the drive was deferred by a day or two,” Jennifer Yasmin Choudhury, the circle officer of Sonapur revenue circle, who led the eviction drive, told The Shillong Times.

“We will have to acquire documentary evidence of the encroachment from the Shillong NH unit authorities before we evict the structures there,” Choudhury said.

Few traders at the Jorabat junction however have sought more time from the district administration.

“About six to seven shop owners who were yet to be clear on the jurisdiction part have sought more time and we obliged accordingly,” she added.
