TURA: The Lower Hawakhana Development Committee in Tura has submitted a complaint to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner alleging noise pollution being created by certain residents and religious institutions from surrounding areas.

According to the committee, on May 11 one Krishna Saha, a resident of Nobinpally, Tura had on the occasion of marriage of his daughter, played loud music along with drums and keyboard for three consecutive days at intervals at unearthly hours, disturbing the peace of the locality.

“Lower Hawakhana is adjacent to Nabinpally locality with barely 200 metres in between. Playing loud music till 1:30 AM and again starting from 4:30 AM with only small gaps of stoppage clearly violates Sub-Section 2 of Rule 5 of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000,” the Secretary of the committee, Jakjeep Marak said.

Another cause of noise pollution in the area according to the committee is the religious ceremony being conducted at the Kali Temple near Gaudiyamath by the Hindu Samshan Bhoomi Committee.

The committee said that while it was not against the community’s culture and religious rituals, such extent of noise pollution which disturbs the sleep and peace of others till morning cannot be justified by any religion.

The committee urged the deputy commissioner to serve notices to both the concerned and to instruct nearby temples to discontinue the use of loudspeakers and drums late at night in surrounding areas to solve the problem.
