MAWKYRWAT: The two regional allies, UDP and HSPDP, are in talks to decide whether to continue the alliance for the district council election next year.
Addressing a gathering at a felicitation programme here on Wednesday, HSPDP’s Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar said the two parties are discussing whether to keep the alliance alive in areas where it performed well in the February election.
“We still have a close relation with the UDP leaders especially in Mawkyrwat constituency. We have discussed about the preparation for the district council election since there was poor result in many constituencies. It seems that the opinion of UDP as well as HSPDP is to go alone in the election,” he said.
Though the MLA hinted at going alone in the polls, he maintained that “in some areas where we felt that there was a benefit, we will try to keep the alliance alive”.
He gave the example of Mawkyrwat and Ranikor constituencies.
While in the former case the alliance performed well in the latter it was disappointing.
Tongkhar informed that HSPDP had spoken to UDP president Donkupar Roy about reviving the combine in Mawkyrwat.
“However, if that does not happen we should not worry or lose hope but work harder to win. Also, we should understand that every political party has the right to strengthen their own party and that is the responsibility of every leader,” he added.
When asked about the candidate from Mawkyrwat for the district council polls, Tongkhar said it would depend on the winnability of the person and urged party workers to be honest while suggesting names for candidature.
He informed that many leaders and party workers of different political parties from different areas of the constituency have expressed their willingness to join HSPDP and give support for next year’s election. He also expressed confidence that the party will regain the seat from Mawkyrwat.
The meeting, which was convened by the president of HSPDP Mawkyrwat Nolip Lyngdoh, was organised to felicitate the legislator.
