KHNAM youth body meets Samlin on PHE issues
SHILLONG: The youth wing of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) met PHE Minister Samlin Malniang with a demand to appoint a full-fledged microbiologist at Mawphlang PHE who will be entrusted with the task of testing the quality of water.
KHNAM youth wing president Thomas Passah said that the minister assured them that the matter will be looked into and also informed them that the PHE is proposing to come up with a full-fledged PHE lab which will have the necessary equipment and experienced manpower. “With the setting up of the lab, there won’t be a need to go to Pasteur Institute or the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board,” said Passah.
Another issue raised by the KHNAM was regarding the appointment of an indigenous chief engineer of the PHE as the incumbent chief engineer is set to retire soon. “The minister said that he will examine the matter and do the needful,” said Passah.

Preparation for Synod at Kroh in full swing
Nongpoh: Preparations for the Ri Bhoi Presbyterian Synod CE Union 2019 scheduled to be held at the Presbyterian Church at Kroh, Ri Bhoi District are progressing at full pace with the active participation of church leaders.
This was highlighted during a meeting held between the local legislator of Nongpoh constituency Mayralborn Syiem, church leaders and officers from various departments at the village on Wednesday. Syiem said that it is his responsibility along with the village Durbar of Kroh and the church leaders to make the event a grand success. He also informed that officers of various line departments were invited to the meeting in order to get first-hand reports on the requirements for hosting such a big congregation. He also promised the church leaders that he will do his best to provide the necessary assistance and urged the officers present to take responsibility in providing schemes through their concerned departments to make the synod a grand success.

Seng Khihlang clarifies on Lawsohtun issue
SHILLONG: The president of Seng Khihlang, H.R. Kurbah clarified that affairs of the Seng Khasi Lawsohtun should not be mixed with the functioning of the Seng Khihlang. The Seng Khihlang convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday and stated that Devistone Swer as the general secretary is a hard working man. It may be mentioned that members of Seng Khasi Lawsohtun have denied reports of irregularities in the construction of an eco-friendly crematorium in the locality saying the project is being financed by the divisional forest officer. Referring to media reports that blamed irregularities in Seng Khasi for the delay in the project that started in 2015, the members said in a statement issued that the crematorium was first constructed by Swer, who is the president of the managing committee of Seng Khasi School in Lawsohtun but is not part of the executive committee.

DC stresses on inter-dept meetings in WGH
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh has stressed on the need for frequent meetings of officials in district offices of all departments to iron out creases and ensure better performance. Addressing a gathering at one of the coordination meetings on Wednesday in Tura, Singh said the meeting is important “because this is a forum where inter-departmental issues can be resolved through discussions and schemes which are convergence in nature can be planned”. The deputy commissioner laid particular emphasis on the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sarak Yojna, rural electrification, rural water supply systems and health and sanitations as “these are some of the basic services crucial to the lives of the rural populace”.
He also told the officials he was responsible and answerable to the public and promised to “guide and motivate” the officers.

Sec 144 to stop wildlife hunting
WILLIAMNAGAR: East Garo Hills District Magistrate Ramkumar S has promulgated Section 144 of the CrPC prohibiting illegal hunting of wild animals, even with an air-gun. According to a press release issued on Wednesday, in view of illegal hunting of wild animals either by individuals or groups in the district and informed that steps are to be taken to prevent destruction of wildlife.
Teachers’ meet on May 19
JOWAI: The West Jaintia Hills unit of the Meghalaya SSA School Teachers’ Association (MSSASA) will hold its annual meeting on May 19 at 10:30am at the District Library Auditorium, Myntong Jowai. According to MSSASA Unit Secretary T Sumer, the meeting with present the annual audit report and also will discuss on issues such as teachers’ salary, pending arrear as well as others.
