17-year-old sexually abused
JOWAI: A woman lodged a complaint with Khliehriat police that her sister, aged 17 years old was sexually abused by Warning Maria for the last three years. According to the woman, who is the elder sister of the victim, the girl is staying at Latyrke village, East Jaintia Hills for the last three years for schooling.The complaint further stated that Maria had threatened the victim with dire consequences if she reported the matter to anyone.
The Khliehriat Police have registered a case under section 506 IPC along with section 3(a)/4 POCSO Act.

Alternate sites for dumping
SHILLONG: Shillong Municipal Board Minister, Hamlet Dohling said the department has identified three lands as alternate dumping site. When contacted, he said talks will be held with residents at the sites identified at Lawai in Marbisu, Tynring village and Rapleng village. “Process is on to discuss and make them understand of the importance for having the alternate site,” he said. He allayed the anxieties of the people that the department is mulling for scientific methods to ensure no foul smell emanates from the dumping ground and with no effect on the health of the people and the environment. Earlier, in the day, FKJGP members met the Minister to apprise him of the condition of the marten with congested wastes and foul smell from the dumping ground.

Ban on felling of trees
JOWAI: The District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills on intimation received from the Divisional Forest Officer (T), West Jaintia Hills district have prohibited felling of trees, extraction of sand and illegal collection of boulders from the river bed of Myntdu and its vicinity.

KSU Ri Bhoi against BSF HQ
NONGPOH: The intention of the Border Security Force to set up a battalion headquarters at Umshaproh village under Raid Bhoilasa in Ri Bhoi District has drawn strong opposition from the Khasi Students’ Union North Khasi Hills District Unit. A delegation of the Union led by its president Ferdynald Kevin Kharkamni met the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi, RM Kurbah on Tuesday urging her intervention to cancel the No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued for land acquisition for the purpose of establishment of BSF Battalion Headquarter at Umshaproh village.Speaking to The Shillong Times, Kharkamni said that the DC had assured the union to take up the matter with the higher authorities.He also informed that as per reliable sources, the BSF intends to acquire a land measuring 100 acres owned by Twilington Marbaniang at Umshaproh under the Power of Attorney given to Manosha Warjri, a resident of Umpling, Shillong.The KSU leader also alleged that the BSF officers from Sector Headquarter, Jowai in a meeting with Manosha earlier had misled her by giving false information saying that the land requirement was only for setting up of a hospital and a school whereas in a letter from the then deputy commissioner of Ri Bhoi, CP Gotmare, addressed to her, it was clearly mentioned in the subject that the land acquisition was for the establishment of BSF Battalion Headquarter.
The Union further urged the traditional heads of Raid Bhoilasa and Umshaproh villages to take up this matter.

Procession of postal employees
SHILLONG: The postal employees of Shillong will take out a procession on Wednesday at 12 pm from Shillong GPO in support of their various demands.The employees are on strike from May 22 and several round of talks between the unions and the department of posts have failed. The leaders of different constituent organisations of MJCTU&A will address the gathering.

World Anti-Tobacco Day
WILLIAMNAGAR : As part of observation of World Anti-Tobacco Day, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Garo Hills, Williamnagar, will organise extempore speech competition for the students from Class VIII to Class X and Class XI to Class XII on 31 May at DRDA Hall No.1 in Williamnagar. The press communiqué issued by the Secretary of the DLSA in this regard stated that free medical camp in collaboration with the District Medical and Health Officer, East Garo Hills will also be conducted simultaneously on the day.

Skill competition kicks off
Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya in-charge of Labour, Prestone Tynsong, on Tuesday inaugurated the Meghalaya Skill Competition 2018, at the Government Industrial Training Institute, Rynjah in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary in-charge of Labour, M.S Rao.Prestone encouraged the participants to excel in the two-day competitions, beginning Wednesday, as it would allow them further exposure to the outside world. He observed that unemployed youths always seek government jobs and do not make effort to use their skills and talents to stand on their feet. He also lamented the mindset of parents who send their children to be educated with the sole aim of landing government jobs leading to rise in unemployment.

Powergrid Swachhta Pakhwada
SHILLONG: As per the directives of Government of India, SwachhtaPakhwada is being observed in all the establishments of POWERGRID across the region from May 16-31.The observance started with the oath taking of Swachhta pledge by all the employees in their respective workplace. Garbage bins were handed over to NEIGHRIMS Shillong wherein the Medical Superintendent of NEIGHRIMS and D S Yadav,Executive Director POWERGRID NERTS , A K Borthakur DGM(HR) and other officials were also present.

Drug abuse, HIV/AIDS awareness
MAWKYRWAT: With a view to sensitise youths about the danger of drugs and also about HIV/AIDS, the Social Economic Life & Development (SELD) Committee of the Jingiaseng Samla Balang Presbyterian Wahsiej organised an awareness programme on “Drug Abuse & HIV/AIDS” at the hall of Wahsiej Presbyterian Church, South West Khasi Hills District. Speaking on the occasion, Adolescent Counsellor, Community Health Centre (CHC) Mawkyrwat, Wantei Lyngkhoi said, “Adolescent age is the period in which most youths are curious and want to experiment everything. Therefore it is very important for the parents to take good care of the children at this age especially in this era in which internet can be access easily and misuse by them.”

JH body for correct signboards
SHILLONG: The All Jaintia Youth Welfare (AJYWO), central body demanded from GR Infra Ltd company currently working for the NH-6 project to rectify the spellings of villages on signboards erected along the NH-6. In a statement issued here, the president of the organisation, M H Dkhar said, the company is working on the road project starting from Sumer in West Jaintia Hills District till Malidor East Jaintia Hills District.He added it is unacceptable to the local people to have the names of villages misspelled.

Army School shines in CBSE
Shillong: Army Public School Shillong outshined again in the CBSE Class X results which was declared on Tuesday. Nishtha Chaudhary became the school topper with 98.2%, Neeraj Deb secured second position with 98% and Yashraj Krishna Singh secured third position with 95%. 11 students secured 90% and above marks in aggregate. Neeraj Deb scored 100 marks in Mathematics.

Post office woes in Laitkor
SHILLONG: The general secretary of Laitkor Dorbar Pyllun drew the attention of the Post Master General, Shillong on the inconvenience faced by the people of Laitkor at the Post Office, Laitkor Peak situated at Air Force Station Laitkor. In a statement issued here, the general secretary, Helston Roy Kharkongor flagged issues that has obstructed the availability of using the services of the Post Office. He pointed out that the Post Office road is not safe and inaccessible to the general public because the Air Force Station Laitkor Peak does not allow the people to approach the post office. He also asserted that sometimes the candidates’ call letters, joining letters etc gets delayed. Kharkongor urged the Post Master General Shillong to solve their problems.

EDUEXPO to be held
Shillong: The 7th edition of EDUEXPO, Shillong will be held at All Saint’s Hall, IGP on May 29 and 30 from 11 am to 6pm. The expo is a platform for the students to meet some of the best institutes of the country and give them a chance to interact one on one with deans, faculties, counsellors of different institutes.

BSF top boss visits state
Shillong: Nasir Kamal, IPS ADG of BSF, Special DG Head Quarter(Easter Command), Kolkata visited Frontier HQ, BSF Meghalaya and its AOR to review the security scenario from May 27-29. He along with L Mohanti, IPS Inspector General, Ftr HQr, BSF, Meghalaya visited border areas of Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.On May 28,Kamal inaugurated a Skill Development Center at Mawpat BSF Camp and at Umpling BSF Camp, he interacted with BSF officers and briefed on operational situation of Meghalaya. He also interacted with jawans and met a Sainik Sanmelan on May 28.

Support for 50 schools in JH
JOWAI: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday launched the Satya Bharti Quality Support Programme project in Jaintia Hills District.The Bharti Foundation has partnered with Education department to provide quality support programme to 25 schools each from the two districts in Jaintia Hills. The Foundation will develop model classrooms, prepare assessment of students, provide remedial classes and create provision for school level support staff.
