Curfew clamped in Shillong areas, James calls for peace

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Home Minister James K. Sangma on Friday appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony in the violence-hit Shillong where curfew has been clamped in 14 localities at precautionary measure.

A spate of violence broke out in the heart of the capital of Meghalaya wherein members of two communities clashed on Thursday night triggering fear among the citizens.

The State Government on Friday reviewed the security situation in Shillong following Thursday night’s violent incidents

Sangma assured the people that the government was closely monitoring the prevailing situation and had taken all measures to restore peace.

He said that the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills has been directed to hold a meeting with senior citizens and NGOs to resolve the issue. He also appealed the citizens of the state not to fall prey to false reports propagated in social media.

After a spree of violence, the district administration has imposed curfew in 14 violence-hit localities of the city. The district administration has also deployed additional forces to curb violence. Meanwhile, internet service has been suspended in the city while schools and colleges have been shut in the city.
