SHILLONG: One person has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 28-year-old nurse in the city.
Police said the man was a neighbour of the victim, Leiyaton Soro, at Lower Nongrim Hills. He was arrested late on Wednesday night.
However, they did not divulge any detail about him.
Soro’s body was found at Ryndangbriew viewpoint at Umiam on May 29.
East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said police have evidence against the neighbour and a blood-stained vehicle used by the accused was seized.
“It appears that the accused had a liking for the victim who was about to get married to somebody else,” the SP said.
Police said the accused either killed the girl in his house or somewhere at Lower Nongrim Hills and carried the body in the vehicle and dumped it at Ryndangbriew viewpoint.
Soro was from Manipur’s Ukhrul district and was working at Nazareth Hospital.
According to the SP, though the accused denied his involvement, police are banking on the evidence to establish a case against him.
It was the accused who identified the victim from her earring that he had gifted to Soro, police said, adding that there are many inconsistencies in his statements.
Earlier in the day, a delegation comprising various Naga organisations led by the Naga Elders’ Forum called on Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Home Minister James K. Sangma, in the former’s office chamber.
The organisations asked the government to institute an inquiry into the murder case.
