SHILLONG: Independent MLA from Nongkrem constituency, Lambor Malniang called for speedy investigation into the incident that led to heightened and volatile situation in Shillong.

Speaking to reporters, he said the matter to rehabilitate the sweepers was discussed a long time back and the sweepers were given a place at Nongmynsong.

“It is time to rehabilitate them immediately.  We should not allow people from other communities to assert authority over our land,” he said.

Claiming that indigenous people could not walk through Sweepers’ Lane, he claimed anti-social activities thrive in the colony such as gambling and harassment of farmers with the residents of the colony charging commission from the farmers.

Malniang stated the incident was a wake-up call to the representatives to make a check on infiltration.

“We are also minorities, so are they and we understand their situation. We are not asking them to go somewhere else without preparing a place for them. The government is not being irresponsible as it is providing a residential place for them at Nongmynsong,” he added.

According to him, the sweepers’ lane which is proposed to be a traditional market is a sacred place under the jurisdiction of the Syiem of Hima Mylliem.

He added the Syiem of Hima Mylliem should intervene in the matter.
