SHILLONG: The NEHU Students Union and the Khasi Students Union, NEHU unit, on Monday met the vice chancellor demanding immediate removal of paramilitary forces from the campus as the forces are creating problems and harassing students.
The forces started coming in on Saturday night and are still continuing to enter the campus.
According to the unions, the presence of these forces in the campus has created a sense of insecurity among the students and was also brought to the notice of the authority that in the past, the university had agreed to stop accommodation of any forces within the campus.
The two students’ bodies said the university has given the forces several buildings to stay while it fails to address the issue of accommodation to its own students.
“During the meeting with the vice chancellor, it was informed to us that the presence of these forces in the campus was because of the pressure of the government. We strongly condemn the state government for trying to militarise the academic institution and making it as a barrack while it failed to solve the issue of education,” the statement said.
“The students of NEHU will be compelled to go for other means of agitation if these paramilitary forces are not removed from the campus,” the statement added.
The two bodies also condemned the Bimola incident on May 31 and also the inhuman action of the police by beating up youth and use of tear gas.
