SHILLONG: Manjit Singh Rai, a member of the National Commission for Minorities who arrived in the city on Tuesday evening, wanted to know the logic behind shifting the Punjabi Lane residents since they have been residing there for nearly 200 years.
“How can they be shifted as they have been residing there for a long time and it will be like shifting them from their homes,” he said.
Rai said Sikhs are a minority community in the country and the purpose of his visit is to understand their problems and submit a report to the Centre.
Rai said he will meet the chief minister and officials, besides visiting Punjabi Lane to interact with the people.
To a question, Rai said he was also willing to talk to the indigenous people and understand their grievances.
Rai reminded that in 2012, when the North East students had faced racial attacks in Bengaluru and other states, he was appointed as the member of the North East goodwill mission.
Rai as the general secretary of BJP in Punjab then visited the northeastern states to find a solution to the problems faced by the students of the North East in several states.
