SHILLONG: Tension prevailed in Nongmynsong on Tuesday morning after a rumour spread that the government may shift the residents of Punjabi colony (Them Iew Mawlong) to the housing project in the locality.
Local legislator AL Hek said there was total panic in the locality since Monday night after the rumour about the relocation of the Punjabis to the housing project in Nongmynsong, which is meant for BPL families.
“I went to the locality in the morning with Dorbar Shnong and explained to the people that there is no such move on the part of the government and if such decision was taken, he would have been definitely informed about it,” he said.
Hek said the rumour about the relocation may have been a certain individual’s view and the government has not taken any decision on the matter.
The BJP leader said the government will not allow the relocation without consulting the local Dorbar Shnong.
After a public address in the locality, the situation returned to normalcy and shops were opened.
