GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who has been taking keen interests in introduction of Druk Air flight services between Bhutan and Singapore via Guwahati, on Thursday asked Consul General of Bhutan, Phub Tshering to expedite the process for the mutual benefit of the region.  The Bhutan Consul General called on the Chief Minister of Assam here.

It may be noted that the Bhutanese Foreign Minister, Damcho Dorji had announced plan for introduction of Druk Air service between Guwahati-Paro and Singapore in the month of February this year to take advantage of India’s Act Policy initiatives.

Sonowal asked the officer of the Royal Bhutanese Embassy about the status of implementation of the service and informed him that he would request Civil Aviation Ministry, Government of India for expeditiously clearing all formalities so that operating of flights connecting Guwahati-Paro and Singapore soon becomes a reality.

Sonowal also told him that he would also talk to Bhutan Prime Minister Tsering Togbay regarding the issue. Sonowal at the same time on behalf of the people of Assam and on his behalf conveyed the State’s warm greetings and vowed to cement the diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Assam which started in medieval period between kings of Bhutan and Assam.

The age-old bilateral ties between Bhutan and Assam got a boost recently when the tiny Himalayan country set up its consulate in Guwahati to facilitate better trade and people-to-people ties in the region.
