SHILLONG: The National People’s Party will decide in a week or two which seat the chief minister will contest from, its state working president WR Kharlukhi said on Thursday.
When asked, Kharlukhi did not comment on which constituency Sangma will contest or whether he will contest at all and only said the matter “has not been discussed in the party at all as of now”.
Sangma, who is leading a five-party alliance, was sworn in as chief minister in March. He has time till September to resign as Member of Parliament and contest and win an Assembly seat.
The NPP had projected Prestone Tynsong as its chief ministerial candidate before the Assembly elections in February.
However, UDP which supported NPP to form the government was firm that Sangma should lead the government.
It was speculated that Sangma would contest the Ampati by-poll but NPP fielded Clement G Momin and Miani D Shira from Congress emerged victorious with a margin of over 3,000 votes.
