SHILLONG: The NPP has hinted at Congress legislator MM Danggo joining the party.
Danggo is inclined to join NPP since his plea to upgrade Ranikor to civil sub-division was not fulfilled by the Congress-led government and he hopes that the NPP-led MDA would be able to fulfil it. He is expected to resign from the Congress to contest on NPP ticket.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Cabinet minister Sniawbhalang Dhar will visit Ranikor on Tuesday.
According to sources, the visit is aimed at studying the ground reality before declaring it as a civil sub-division.
When asked about Danggo joining NPP, Tynsong said on Monday the doors are always open. He admitted that the legislator was in talks with NPP.
Tynsong, however, said no conditions were set by Danggo for joining NPP.
According to Tynsong, Danggo, a five-time MLA, was dreaming about the civil sub-division, which was a justified demand, but his request was turned down by the appropriate authority.
He told reporters that Danggo had, on several occasions, requested for civil sub-division, which was “necessary”, but “instead he (former chief minister Mukul Sangma) approved Ranikor as administrative unit which, I feel, is as good as saying no”.
Tynsong asserted that 75 per cent of Ranikor is inaccessible and “it is the duty of the state government to make sure that it goes closer to the people”.
‘MUA a company’
The former Congress leader accused Mukul of converting the Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government into a company that ran according to his wish.
However, he said NPP would love to welcome any leader from any constituency. “Our door is always open, 24×7, even for Mukul Sangma if he wishes to.”
