GUWAHATI: Assam police have arrested Alfajos Timung alias Alfa, the prime accused in June 8 lynching of two youths—Nilotpol Das and Abhijit Nath – at Dokmoka of Karbi Anglong. He has been absconding since the occurrence of the barbaric incident.
Alfajos Timung was responsible for spreading rumours about ‘child lifters on the prowl’ that led to the gory incident. He was also involved in two earlier cases of murder in Karbi Anglog district.
Police sources informed that Alfa had engaged in an altercation with Nilotpol and Abhijit at Kangthilangso on the fateful day. Following the altercation Alfa had called a group of his friends to the area. Sensing trouble Nilotpol and Abhijit left the place. Some people even pelted stones at the Mahindra Scorpio of the two youths while some youths followed them on motorcycles at the instruction of Alfa who , in the meantime, spread rumours among villagers in the area that over phone that a child had been abducted and taken in a vehicles.
Police claimed that arrested Alfa confessed that on receiving the rumour spread by him over phone, some villagers surrounded the vehicle of the two youths who were lynched by them.
Alfa was involved in murder of two innocent persons in 2012 and one Mithu Das in 2014 in Karbi Anglong district.
Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by Assam Police to monitor the social media to arrest spread of rumours in the aftermath of the incident at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong has initiated action against around 100 profiles on Facebook and Twitter.
Police has booked 36 persons so far from across the State in the last three days for spreading hate messages through social media platforms.
The special investigating team led by Additional Director General of Police (Security) Harmit Singh has also found that 60 out of these 100 social networking platforms were fake ones and most of them have either been deactivated or deleted.
Meanwhile, Karbi Anglong police has so far arrested 26 persons for their alleged role in the lynching of Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath. These arrested persons were part of the mob that lynched the youths, besides making the video viral.
