Marak I/C Lumdiengjri Traffic Branch and Sub-Inspector Krishna Kumar Ruchal of Sadar Traffic Branch were awarded the Best Shillong Traffic Policemen Award 2018 by Smart Charitable Trust. A certificate of appreciation, a memento and cash award of Rs 7000 was presented to them.The trust was initiated and conceptualised by former additional chief secretary Prashant Naik and others including retired government officers. The aim of the trust is to award common people who have contributed to the well being of society.DGP S.B Singh, East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak, Addl. SP K. Prasad, and others attended the award ceremony.

Petitioners hail HC decision on Wapung C&RD Block
SHILLONG: Aggrieved petitioners who had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to nullify a notification which called for shifting of the existing Community and Rural Development Block from Wapung to Lumshnong village in East Jaintia Hills, have hailed the favourable decision of the Meghalaya High Court.
The Division Bench of the Meghalaya High Court disposed of the petition asking the respondents to pursue the matter so that the Chief Minister’s Secretariat may revoke its notification dated January 9, 2018.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, one of the petitioners, Dame Wanhi Rymbai, appreciated the verdict of Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Judge SR Sen.
The court added the decision shall be taken after six weeks from the date when the copy of the order is served upon the respondents.
Rymbai and Libas Siangshai had filed a PIL seeking quashing of the notification dated January 9, 2018 to shift the existing C&RD Block from Wapung to Lumshnong.
The notification stated that the Block office will continue to function from its present location at Khliehriat till the construction of a new office building at Lumshnong.

Training for NSSO field officers begins in city
SHILLONG: A two-day regional training conference began here on Tuesday to train field officers on concepts, definitions and procedures for collecting information on the topics earmarked by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). The conference will be followed by field training and administration discussion on June 14 and 15.
The NSSO is the primary data collection wing of the Union Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation.
Primary data is collected regularly through nationwide household surveys on various socio-economic subjects. Data collection on the various subjects are made through its rounds of surveys by professionally qualified and trained personnel with a well organized system of controlled measures to ensure quality of data collected using scientific sampling methods since its inception in 1950.
State government also collects the information through inquiry methods using the same technology and schedules that are specially designed for the survey.  
The National Sample Survey will start its 76th round from July 1, 2018 and continue up to December 31, 2018. The 76th round is earmarked for surveys on drinking water, sanitation, hygiene and housing conditions, survey of people with disabilities and acid attack survivors.

DC bans sensitive posts on social media
TURA: Following reports of certain individuals or groups posting and sharing extremely sensitive and volatile messages on social media like Facebook and WhatsApp, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh has prohibited such acts on both platforms.
The order will come into force in the entire district with immediate effect and remain so until further orders.
 The DC also has urged the general public to report such acts to the Police Control Room numbers 8837423053 and 9089199064.

High tech Atal Tinkering Lab inaugurated at Ampati school
TURA: South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner H.D.B Sangma inaugurated the Atal Tinkering Laboratory at Ampati Govt. Higher Secondary School on Tuesday. The state of the art laboratory is the second of its kind in Garo Hills after the same was inaugurated at Tura Govt. Boys’ Higher Secondary School recently.
 The lab has been set up under the Atal Innovation Mission of Niti Aayog. Under the mission, the Union government plans to establish such labs in schools across the country. The aim is to create scientific temper and cultivate the spirit of curiosity and innovation in young minds.
The lab is mentored and knowledge powered by SRJNA. SRJNA is founded by the alumni of IITs dedicated to empowering the ecosystem in education of k-12. 100+ ATL labs have already been established across the country so far.
Grant in-aid including a one-time establishment cost of Rs 10 lakh and operational expenses of Rs 10 lakh for a period of 5 years to each ATL is provided by Niti Aayog.
The lab will enable young children to work with tools and equipment to understand the concepts of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). ATL would contain educational and learning ‘do it yourself’ kits and equipment on – science, electronics, robotics, open source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers and computers. Other desirable facilities include meeting rooms and video conferencing facilities.

World Day against child labour observed in Resubelpara
TURA: The World Day against Child Labour under the theme ‘Generation Safe & Healthy’ was observed at Montfort Higher Secondary School, Resubelpara on Tuesday.
The programme was organised by the District Legal Services Authority, North Garo Hills in which Deputy Commissioner, S C Sadhu was the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Sadhu highlighted the importance of education in eradicating child labour. Remarking on the Right of Free and Compulsory Education Act applying to children below 14 years as envisaged by the Constitution, Sadhu stated that every child is entitled for education which is one of his or her basic rights. He therefore advocated education as a remedy for a peaceful and progressive society. While urging students to work hard and value education, he also advised them to abstain from negative influences of the society. 
Others who attended the programme included Addl. DC AVD Shira, SP S.R Marak and District Child Protection Officer S.G Momin.

Youth body meets local MLA on development issues
Mawkyrwat: The Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS) Shiliang Um Sepngi Zone met local MLA, Renikton L. Tongkhar and submitted a memorandum to speed up developmental projects in Shiliang Um Rilang region of Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills District on Saturday.
“The Primary Health Centre at Mawthawpdah village is the only major health centre in Shilliang Um area and it covered 72 villages which has a population of 25,584. People from the area are facing various problems because there are only two doctors in the PHC and most of the time there are no doctors on Saturday and Sunday. Therefore, we requested the MLA to take up the issue with the government and so that the PHC can be upgrade to a CHC,” SSSS Shiliang Um Sepngi Zone chairman, Rescomand Ramsiej said.
Ramsiej also said that the body has also requested the MLA to consider setting up of a Community College in the region because till now there is no college and students from the region has to travel to Mawkyrwat, Nongstoin or Shillong for further studies. 
Other issues that the SSSS has taken up include the demand to setup a branch office of the Agriculture and Veterinary Departments at Shiliang Um region as 90 percent of the people in the area are farmers and it is very difficult for them to visit offices in Mawkyrwat because of the distance.
Speeding up of construction of the PMGSY road from Laitlawsnai to Mawjyrsim village, repair of the PMGSY road from Jashiar to Rangblang, construction of roads from Mawsaw to Myrskuin and Mawthawthawpdah to Phottdei via Photjalei village are other issues raised by the SSSS. 

New office bearers elected
TURA: The new office bearers of the Rishipara Community Development Society were elected in a meeting held recently. The meeting elected Rabindro Rishi as president, Nukul Rishi as vice president, Merisoon Rishi as general secretary, and Deepok Kumar Rishi as treasurer, besides other members.

Meritorious students felicitated
NONGSTOIN: Meritorious students of Mawiong Lumsyntiew Secondary School, Nongstoin were felicitated during an award function organised by the School Managing Committee. The event was inaugurated by Nongstoin MDC L.G Nongsiej.
Seven students of the school – Riakor Syiemiong, Badashisha Lyngkhoi, Anisha Nongsiej, Laweibasuk Syiemiong, Lumborlang Nonglait, Shemphang Snaitang, Kyrshan Syiemlieh and Banteilang Thyrniang were among those feted on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Nongsiej encouraged the students to study hard with responsibilities and determination to achieve academic and professional success.
