SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak has said there was no delay in carrying out investigation into the lynching of Yakub Khan Nongkynrih on July 8 last year in Upper Shillong.
The response was following the notice of the High Court of Meghalaya after the Nongkynrih’s brother filed a petition through his lawyer MF Qureshi.
Nongkynrih (30) was lynched by an angry mob with an allegation that he had sexually exploited a girl in the locality.
Nongkynrih was a tenant in the girl’s house at Nongkseh and an objectionable video of the girl was found by the brother of the girl in the mobile phone of the former which led to the violent incident.
The SP in his affidavit submitted to the High Court of Meghalaya said that the two accused, Bansharai Thangkhiew (father of the girl) and Badonbok Kharlyngdoh (her brother) were arrested on July 9 last year.
Besides, three accused women were also arrested, but they had secured anticitatory bail.
According to the affidavit of the SP, the case will be charge sheeted soon and FSL report of the exhibits sent for examination at Hyderabad were also received and at this juncture CBI or CID inquiry is not required.
Earlier, the High Court of Meghalaya had issued a notice to police and others for the violent incident of lynching of Nongkynrih ..
The brother of Nongkynrih filed a case in the court seeking either CBI or CID probe into the matter since police did not do anything to prevent the incident.
The petition said Nongkynrih was lynched by the mob in the presence of police personnel.
The petitioner said there was no attempt on the part of the police to rescue the brother of the petitioner from the clutches of the perpetrators of the crime.
“Police kept the investigation into the case in cold storage,” the petitioner said adding though two persons were arrested, they were released on bail a month after the arrest.
According to the petitioner, police had information that the house owner and the family were trying to attack the brother of the petitioner but the police did not act promptly.
