Mawkyrwat: With an aim to promote the habit of reading, the office of the Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District celebrated June 19 as a ‘Day of Reading’ which is part of the Reading Mission 2022 rolled out by NITI Aayog. The entire month of June is also observed as ‘Reading Month’.
The day is celebrated in memory of (L) P.N Panicker, father of the Library Movement in Kerala, whose efforts to promote libraries in far flung areas paved the way for universal literacy in the state and for the creation of Reading Mission, 2022.
Deputy Commissioner, I. Laloo said that the district administration has proposed to launch this mission with the active participation of all stakeholders since reading improves writing, comprehension and communication skills in children.
