SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong of Pomlakrai Mawbynna falling under Nongkrem constituency has cancelled an agreement with the state government whereby they had agreed to give 10 acres of land for construction of an indoor stadium.
The indoor stadium was proposed to be constructed with an eye on the National Games 2022. The stadium was proposed to be built at a cost of Rs 22.75 crore funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC) and the work order was handed over to JC Infotech.
Commenting on the development, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh said the agreement was signed in February 2017 under the initiative of the previous MUA-II Government.
“The Dorbar signed an agreement to give 10 acres of land for the indoor stadium. Tender was called and the work was supposed to start but it was halted,” he said.
Incidentally, the Dorbar sent a letter to the Sports Department mentioning the move to cancel the agreement without giving any concrete reason.
Asked if it will pose any difficulty for the state government which is hosting the 2022 National Games, Lyngdoh said, “We are not facing any problem. Since they are not willing to give the land, we will identify a new plot of land for the indoor stadium.”
He added that there would not be any difficulty since construction work had not begun at the selected plot of land.
“We have already identified two-three plots of land in the adjoining areas,” he said.
