GUWAHATI: The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) on Friday stated that the six members of the outfit who were shown to have surrendered before Assam Police on Thursday had been working with Assam police against the outfit for the last six months (one for four months).

In a statement emailed to the media here the ULFA-I alleged that these six cadres had been used by Assam Police to carry out extortion of indigenous people in the name of the outfit in various parts of Tinsukia district in Assam and in areas of Namsai, Lohit, Dibang and Changlang in Arunachal Pradesh to dent the image of the outfit.

The ULFA-I stated that Assam police had staged the surrender as it was alarmed at the going popularity of the outfit’s ideology and demand among the younger generation thanks to the propaganda launched through the social media platforms. It alleged that Assam police wanted to portray a negative image of the outfit to discourage younger generation from coming to its fold.
