Donkupar suggests expansion of Shillong

SHILLONG: Speaker Donkupar Roy mooted the expansion of Shillong as far as 50-60 km radius to address the problem of congestion and develop the sub-urban areas.
Speaking at the opening of Banalari World Cars retail outlet in Mylliem on Wednesday, Roy said, “We must accept the plan of expansion of Shillong city. Many people would regularly leave for Shillong such as Iewduh (Bara Bazaar),” he said.
Admitting that it is not an easy task, he said there is a need to develop the areas in the outskirts of Shillong.
Meanwhile, Urban Affairs Minister and Mylliem MLA, Hamlet Dohling said there were discussions with the PWD and National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) on the need to speed up the construction of a four-lane road from Umshyrpi to Mylliem to resolve the congestion problems in the city.
