SHILLONG: With the growing demand for creation of more civil sub-divisions in the state, Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy went a step further demanding district status for Sohra and Mairang.
Pointing out that there are many who are demanding civil sub-divisions and districts, he said, “On my part, I demand that Sohra should get the status of district. It is time for Sohra and Mairang to be upgraded to the district level. We also want Laskein and Patharkhmah to get civil sub-divisions.”
According to the Speaker, Sohra and Mairang are the oldest civil sub-divisions in the state.
Commenting on the criticism regarding the decision to upgrade Ranikor administrative unit to a civil sub-division, he said that a party does not have the authority since the decision is taken by the government.
“You cannot deny that Conrad Sangma is the chief minister of the state and he upgraded the Ranikor administrative unit in his capacity as a CM. He went to Ranikor as the CM and not as president of NPP,” Roy said.
