SHILLONG: Many campaigns and  awareness programme  for  protecting river Wahumkhrah have died its own natural  death over the years  but the river which was once a glory for  Shillong continues to bear the brunt of human onslaught in the form of pollution.

Speaking to reporters here recently about the need to protect the river , KHADC CEM, PN Syiem   said that the State Government had failed to implement the rules and regulations.

“ The problem is   we are very weak in law making  and   implementing it and if the Government had a strong law, no one would have thrown garbage in the river because they know they would be in jail for 5-6  days,” Syiem told reporters

Maintaining a huge scheme is required assistance from the Ministry of Water  Resources for protecting river Wahumkhrah, Syiem  also expressed his happiness over the fact that fencing are being placed through the river in a bid to discourage people from throwing garbage onto the   river.

When asked if the KHADC has failed to protect the river he  said, “ How much can you expect   financially and  manpower   wise from a small institution like the KHADC.”

He ,however, said that the KHADC was continuously highlighting about the need to protect the river and   it was also providing small schemes to different localities which would play a role in saving the river from garbage

It was in the  year  2013, when the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) had launched the ‘Clean Wahumkhrah Mission’
