SHILLONG: Rupa Marak, who was the president of Garo Students’ Union, Western Zone (North) for 12 years, stressed the need for upgradation of Dadenggre, the oldest civil-division in Garo Hills as a district.
Three Civil- Subdivisions namely Resubelbara, Dadenggre and Ampati came into being in 1982 in Garo Hills. Resubelbara and Ampati have been upgraded to a District but Dadenggre was left out though it has more population, bigger area and jurisdiction, Marak said in a statement on Sunday.
Dadenggre Civil-sub-division area covers six Assembly constituencies, including newly created Raksamgre Civil-sub-division whereas Resubelpara and Ampati have only four Assembly constituencies.
Marak said there was a demand for the upgradation of Dadenggre Civil sub-division into a District while he was the president of Garo Students’ Union Western Zone.
Referring to the statement of Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy seeking upgradation of Sohra and Mairang Civil-sub-divisions into districts, Marak said the present government should upgradate Dadenggre Civil-sub-division into a district which should cover the Raksamgre Civil-sub-division too.
People of Raksamgre too had supported this demand as this will bring infrastructural development which will in turn benefit the people and bring them closer to the administration.
“We will soon meet the chief minister in this regard”, he said, adding that the attention of the government should also turn toward the development of Raksamgre Civil-Sub Division.
“ Creation of Ranikor Civil-sub-division will help the public immensely but if it is left neglected like Raksamgre, it will not do any good to the people”, Marak said.
