TURA: North Garo Hills legislator from Kharkutta constituency, Rupert Momin, has moved the state government to explore the possibility of tapping the tourism potential in the region’s three tourist spots to boost the economy.
The legislator, on Wednesday, led a delegation of government officials, including tourism joint director K M Momin, to three tourist sites, namely, the Aje Gilje Eco Park at Kharkutta, Nakachong river site at Adokgre and Rongmagittil Nature Park at Jambil.
Locals from the area are keen to transform the Aje Gilje Eco Park into a bird sanctuary due to the presence of a large number of bird species in the area. A move has also been floated to make the Nakachikong riverside into a fish sanctuary while Rongmagittil’s massive single rock formation and presence of waterfalls at Jambal could draw tourists, both local and foreign, to the region.
“There is immense tourism potential in these areas because it is part of our ancient Garo folklore. Unfortunately, we have so far been unable to tap this potential due to lack of adequate infrastructure. We are optimistic of changing this around” said Kharkutta legislator Rupert Momin
Tourism joint director, K M Momin, during his visit informed that locals would play a crucial role in the success of the tourism venture.
“There remain many virgin areas in Garo Hills yet to be explored for its tourism potential. Attempts are being made to cover every spot,” said Momin.
