GUWAHATI: Women’s cricket in Meghalaya has received a shot in the arm with the selection of Daiaka Emigale Warjri and Deiphibapynshngain L Mawnai of Meghalaya Cricket Association in the NADP/Bihar ZCA team for the inter-zonal under-19 one-day tournament to be held in Chennai from July 16 to 25.

Both the cricketers are from West Khasi Hills District Cricket Association.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, MCA secretary, Naba Bhattacharjee expressed optimism that the selection would give the much needed impetus to women’s cricket in the state.

“MCA is hopeful that schools will come forward to encourage the young cricketers. We are ready to provide assistance to serious interventions by educational institutes and affiliated district associations,” Bhattacharjee said.

“BCCI has also raised the match fee and a player representing the state in a particular age group can receive a minimum Rs 50,000 in a season besides availing dearness allowance, free air travel, accommodation, et al,” he added.

NCA camp

The All-India Junior Selection Committee has picked Akash Kumar Choudhury of Meghalaya Cricket Association for the under-19 national camp to be conducted at the National Cricket Academy, Bengaluru from July 30 to August 23.

MCA secretary, Bhattacharjee said the selection of Akash was based on his consistent performance for the NADP/Bihar ZCA team in the inter-zonal cricket academy tournament that concluded recently.
