Tura: In a bid to combat plastic pollution in and around the town area, the District Administration, West Garo Hills along with the students of Don Bosco College and team from IBDLP, Tura organised collection of plastic bottles cum cleaning drive at Pelga Waterfall area near Tura on Friday morning.
Emphasizing on the philosophy of three R’s – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse to minimize plastic pollution in the region, the West Garo Hills, Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh informed that plastic bottles are being collected from various areas of the town which will be re-use in the construction of a house or something useful for people by involving community participation along with freelancers.
Further, the Deputy Commissioner had appealed to all especially the students of different Schools and Colleges in the town to restrict and minimise use of plastics in their daily lives and also urged the teachers to motivate children to restrict generation of plastic waste in their surrounding areas. He also reminded the citizens of the town to organise cleaning drives in their respective localities from time to time and urge everyone to participate and support in making our dwelling place clean and green.
Moreover, the Deputy Commissioner has requested all the picnic goers not to leave plastic waste along the river coast or throw waste in the stream.
It may be mentioned that about 10 medium sized garbage bags of plastic bottles have been collected in two hours time and the collection will continue in the coming days. In view of this the Deputy Commissioner has called upon the people to join hands and volunteer to make this mission a success.
